Injury update: Great news in Red Wings land

Key Detroit Red Wings veterans Henrik Zetterberg, Niklas Kronwall, and Justin Abdelkader have all returned to practice Wednesday, giving the team a much-needed injection of talent and leadership.

Zetterberg was sporting a neck injury, while Kronwall was out with back issues, and Abdelkader dealt with groin issues.

Detroit can finally ice their ideal power play unit. Head coach Jeff Blashill, speaking to NHL.com, seemed rather pleased with the results thus far in practice. "I think the very first power-play practice up in Traverse City, we had the same (group) and then we haven't been able to really have that group together until today. So we tried to take advantage of it. I think we spent a good 15-20, actually 20 minutes on it. You try to get a little PK work in as well but I thought both units looked good.”

The Wings had an abysmal power play last season, finishing 27th in the NHL, but in the last quarter of the season they were performing at a top 10 rate. They hope to bring that late-season success into the 2017-18 season.

Few analysts expect a playoff contending team out of Detroit this year; it’s up to them to prove the pundits wrong. Healthy, this team can still do damage and start a new playoff streak.
