INJURY UPDATE: Murray eyeing return?
Keystone Press

When Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Matt Murray went down with an injury prior to game 1 of his team’s first round playoff series against the Columbus Blue Jackets, fans and analysts wondered how veteran Marc-Andre Fleury would fare in Murray’s absence. The answer: better than they could have ever hoped. In 7 games, Fleury is 6-1 with a 2.37 GAA and .936 Sv%. Not bad, not bad at all.

Don’t look now, but Murray could be back in the Penguins lineup sooner rather than later . Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reported earlier today that Murray skated on his own this morning and appears ready to take the next steps in his rehab process.

If Murray returns to full health and manages to work his way into the Penguins lineup, it’ll be interesting to see how head coach Mike Sullivan manages the situation. Fleury has been one of the best goaltenders this postseason, so barring a total collapse it would be hard to envision him being replaced. That being said, Murray had no problem coming off the bench last season with no warning to replace Jeff Zatkoff when Fleury was injured in the team’s run to their 2016 NHL Stanley Cup championship. Can history repeat itself once again in Pittsburgh’s crease?
