Insane college hockey hit is the most brutal impact of the year.

This may go down as one of the most brutal hits of all of 2019.

On Saturday during a college hockey game contested between Arizona State University and the University of Minnesota Twins Cities we were witness to one of the most brutal impacts I've seen from an open ice body check in a long time. ASU defenseman Jacob Wilson absolutely clobbered UMN forward Sampo Ranta with what can only be described as an absolutely monster hit, and perhaps even that would be an understatement. The impact honestly looked more like a car wreck than an actual body check in a hockey game, with the bodies of both men going flying in opposite directions as if they were being flung from a motor vehicle.

Now I would love to be able to say that this was a textbook body check from Wilson that laid out Ranta but unfortunately it seems like this hit was very much an illegal blow from Wilson. Wilson clearly launches himself upwards prior to making contact and does appear to make the head of Ranta the primary point of contact on the hit on top of that. Nonetheless there's no denying that this is a truly spectacular impact and I would be lying if I didn't admit that I have watched this one quite a few times already.

For those concerned with the call on the play Wilson was penalized and was in fact quickly ejected from the game following the hit, a sign that the officials on the ice also felt that this was an illegal body check. It's unclear at this time if Wilson will be facing any additional discipline for his hit on Ranta but given how much media coverage this particular hit is getting I wouldn't be surprised if Wilson gets more than just a mild slap on the wrist for this infraction. Arizona State University falls under the purview of the National Collegiate Athletic Association so if any additional discipline is forthcoming I would expect them to be the body to hand it out.

This is Ranta's freshman year in college hockey so hopefully he's going to be alright in spite of how bad this one looked.
