Earlier this month rumors of who would be the eventual replacements behind the Red Wings bench began to circulate, and while one of those assistant positions has been filled, one remains vacant.

Those rumors had suggested the job would be filled by former National Hockey League head coach Todd Richards, and a report published Wednesday from Columbus Blue Jackets insider Aaron Portzline has seemingly confirmed the rumors.

From Portzline's report:

Former Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards, fired only two weeks into the 2015-16 season, is a candidate to join the Detroit Red Wings coaching staff as an assistant to coach Jeff Blashill, The Dispatch has learned.

The Red Wings have requested permission to interview Richards for the job and the Blue Jackets granted it. Sources said the interview won't happen until Richards returns from Russia, where he's an assistant coach for Team USA in the IIHF World Championships. The tournament runs through May 22.

It certainly sounds like the Red Wings have their eyes set on one man, whether or not he signs on the dotted line remains to be seen.
