Insider Report: Five impact players on the trade block
Keystone Press

With the 2017-18 NHL season now two weeks in, coaches and GMs are beginning to get a sense of their roster moving forward. While it’s likely still too early to start analyzing which teams will be buyers and sellers in the trade market, there are still several players expected to be in play at this season’s trade deadline.

Anonymous rumor blogger Eklund has a dubious record when it comes to reporting, but his list of five players who could be on the move this season is compelling, nonetheless. Among the players he expects to be in play are some serious star players. New York Islanders captain John Tavares leads the pack and he’ll continue to be the focus of trade speculation until the moment he’s either traded or re-ups with the Isles.

But, how about Toronto Maple Leafs winger James van Riemsdyk? With his contract set to expire this offseason and big money extensions coming for both William Nylander and Auston Matthews, could the Leafs move JVR for picks and prospects? Maybe a top four defender?

Or, how about Columbus Blue Jackets forward Cam Atkinson? The 28-year-old led the BJ’s in scoring last season, but he’s had a few spats with head coach John Tortorella. With his contract up this year, could he be on the way out in Ohio?

Desperate for a defender? How about John Carlson of the Washington Capitals? The talented offensive defenseman needs an extension this summer, but with little to no news surrounding his next deal, could he be on the move?

Finally, who will buy high on Vegas Golden Knights sniper James Neal? Selected by the Knights from the Nashville Predators this past summer in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft, the sniper’s deal expires this summer, as well. He could be a dynamic offensive option for a team desperate for offense come the deadline.
