Insider reveals how Leafs screwed up Marner’s deal!

Nine days before the official opening of NHL training camps we are still waiting to see what will happen to the Toronto Maple Leafs and restricted free agent Mitch Marner, who remains without a contract for the start of the new season.

While some of us have had enough waiting around for the young star to put his name on the dotted line, one insider wanted to let fans know how things could have been much different right now if the Maple Leafs had not made a significant mistake last season when it came to signing Marner to a contract extension.

Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun has reported hearing the Maple Leafs could have been able to sign Marner a year ago to an eight-year contract worth $8 million per year. He revealed that at the time, however, general manager Kyle Dubas and the team thought it was too much.

Sure, it could have been quite a hit to take last summer to get Marner under contract, but the kid put up 94 points last season! Instead, they now locked in an apparent standoff with Marner, and we all know it will cost the Leafs much more to get him signed.

Marner is reportedly seeking as much as $13 million per season on a long term deal, while the team would prefer to keep his salary under the $10 million mark.

No regrets, Leafs?
