Insider reveals just how much the Red Wings are prepared to offer Stamkos.
Keystone Press.

Earlier this week one of the top insiders in the business reveled his belief that a large number of teams were prepared to offer Steven Stamkos a long term deal with double digit millions attached, and we may now have confirmation on the identity of one of those teams.

According to comments made today by TSN insider Darren Dreger during a radio interview with TSN's 1050 in Toronto, he believes that the Detroit Red Wings are prepared to offer Stamkos a seven year deal with an average annual value of $10 million dollars should he become a free agent on July 1st.

It's a huge amount of salary for the Red Wings to commit to one player, especially with contracts like those of Pavel Datsyuk and Jimmy Howard still currently within the organization. Even then with the sheer number of teams likely to be involved this offer may not be enough to get it done.

The Red Wings also have a number of soon to be free agents on their roster like Darren Helm and Drew Miller, and while the lack of a new deal may be a result of their desire to test free agency, this report from Dreger would suggest that Holland may have bigger targets in mind.

With that said the top story of the day remains the retirement of an NHL star after nearly two decades in the league.
