The NHL got things right when putting the schedule of the exhibition games together for this week’s action, ahead of the 24-team playoff tournament.

While we expected the matchup between the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs to be way more intense, which it wasn’t, the one between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames later that same night did not disappoint.

Without fans in the attendance, the NHL has put up crowd noise and music, but it didn’t stop broadcasters and even fans from hearing the Oilers and Flames players chirping at one another during the contest.

It especially got louder in the first period when the Oilers caught an early two-goal lead. Many reporters pointed out the atmosphere in Edmonton and how exciting the rivalry between the two Alberta clubs remains alive despite the long four-month pause.

The two teams even went at it hard on the ice, playing without holding back and running each other without mercy.

The Oilers ended up on top of this one, thanks to captain Connor McDavid who recorded two goals, to get the 4-1 win over the Flames.

Clearly, the postseason has started for these two teams and it was great to see - AND HEAR - on the ice last night!
