It was deja-vu all over again for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Boston Bruins once again eliminated the Canadian team in seven games, this time with a final score of 5-1 to move on to face the Columbus Blue Jackets in the second round.

The Leafs signed the most coveted free agent in John Tavares this past summer, he would left the New York Islanders wanting to play for his favourite childhood team and go on to the Stanley Cup finals.

Well, the Islanders have a better shot than he does this spring.

Tavares finished third in the NHL with 47 goals during the regular season and scored Toronto’s lone goal Tuesday. While his former team moves on to the second round, he faces the heartbreak of the elimination.

“I’m in my 10th year. These opportunities, you recognize and appreciate them more and more. You don’t take any of them for granted,” said Tavares, who played his first nine NHL seasons for the Islanders. “You know how hard it is to win …”

While the star player is heartbroken, it didn’t stop a Isles fan from a popular podcast to taunt him with humour thanks to the perfect throwback picture.

We are still waiting to see which team the Isles will take on as the await the winners of the do or die Game 7 showdown between the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes.

However, Tavares will have to wait much longer than they will…

“You’re disappointed,” he said, per NHL.com. “You want to make the most of this, and we didn’t. At some point you’re going to have to lick your wounds, look yourself in the mirror and find ways to improve and how can we get better, and find a way to break through.

“We have a lot of talent, a lot of youth, a lot of growth still ahead of us, but just to really realize you have to make the most of every chance you get. It’s just difficult right now.”

And this picture does not help, that’s for sure…
