This is what I think. Not everyone will agree and we know some of you will hit the comment section and get all personal. However, here is what I think about the whole “John Tavares is coming to New York for the first time since leaving the Islanders”:

Get over it!

The former Islanders captain will return to Nassau Coliseum on Thursday night for the first time since he signed a lucrative contract with his hometown team in Toronto as a free agent in July.

Some Islanders fans are still mad about it, as this video that went viral on Tuesday proves that they are still upset over his decision.

When asked about how he felt to return back to Long Island, where it all began, and face the angry fans, Tavares had the best classy answer. He couldn’t say he is fed up of all this and how the fans should get a life, but I can.

Here is what he told TSN’s Mark Masters

“I really embraced being an Islander,” he said. “I loved it. It was a great place to play. I never didn’t enjoy my time there even when times weren’t going well. I did everything I could to just help the team hopefully win a Stanley Cup and unfortunately we weren’t able to do that and I take responsibility, especially being the captain, not doing a good enough job consistently. But I gave it everything I had and that’s all I tried to do is just try to be the best player and person I can be, you know, not perfect, but you certainly learn a lot.”

Masters pressed him about the negative fans. Tavares unfortunately knows that he might get booed.

“Yeah, I mean, you have a sense for what it might be like so whatever it is, it will be, I’ll just try and go out there and try to play,” he said.

When a player comes back to his former team’s town, there is usually a video tribute. A warm moment where fans acknowledge what the player has done for the team and applaud him. Let’s hope the Islanders fans can realize before Thursday that Tavares did everything he could to be the best captain ever in New York. And clearly I am not the only one who thinks like this.

And Isles fans: focus on the positive. For the first time since 2016, when the Islanders lost in the second round, New York will be in the postseason. That’s worth making a video! Focus on that Isles fans and let’s all move on.
