The World Cup of Hockey has hit a number of teams with a number of different problems but the New York Islanders are dealing with a World Cup problem no one else has, a goaltending controversy playing out on the world stage.

At the end of last season it appeared everyone expected goaltender Jaroslav Halak to be on his way out of New York, including Halak himself, but hernia surgery put a stop to those plans and now his performance at the World Cup of Hockey will make it extremely hard for the Islanders to rationalize that move. Halak has arguably been the best player of the entire tournament, and has arguably carried Team Europe to the finals of this tournament.

The Islanders are now left with three goaltenders on one-way contracts including Halak, Thomas Greiss, the man expected to replace Halak should he be traded but a man Halak beat out for the job on Team Europe, and a 25 year old who wants the number one job in J-F Berube. That doesn't even include 23 year old prospect Christopher Gibson, so it's obvious the Islanders need to do something here.

“We all know it’s not the greatest situation,” Berube said as per Newsday's Arthur Staple. “For me, I play my best when I play a lot and I’m used to playing a lot. We just have to see what happens.”

The writing is on the wall,  the question now becomes who and when.
