Earlier today the New York Islanders surprised many in the hockey community when they gave up a huge number of assets in order to acquire forward Jean Gabriel Pageau from the Ottawa Senators in a trade. The move was surprising if only due to the fact that Pageau, a player set to be an unrestricted free agent this summer, was a pure rental.

Well it seems that New York Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello knew something that everyone else did not, because Pageau is no longer merely a rental for the New York Islanders. According to an official announcement from the Islanders organization, the team has signed Pageau to a long term contract that will keep him in New York for the foreseeable future.

From the Islanders:

New York Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau has agreed to a six-year contract extension with the club. The Islanders acquired Pageau earlier today from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a conditional first round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, the club's second round pick in 2020 and a conditional third round pick in 2022.

The Islanders have not disclosed the financial details of this deal but no doubt that information will be forthcoming shortly as insiders will be all over this one on trade deadline day.

Update: According to a report from Sportsnet's National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman the average annual value on the Pageau deal will be $5 million, bringing the total value of his new 6 year deal to $30 million.
