When Lou Lamoriello left the Toronto Maple Leafs and joined the New York Islanders last season, fans in the Canadian city were happy to be able to count on a younger, more energetic general manager in Kyle Dubas

However, while they say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, Lamoriello had another up his sleeves on Wednesday as he ended up taking away one member of his old staff away from the Leafs.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Lamoriello and the Islanders will get the services of assistant coach Jim Hiller, who is leaving Toronto to come to New York.

Friedman adds that he was a Lamoriello’s favourite while he was at the reigns of the Leafs and it makes sense to see both men back together, working on the same team.

Hiller isn’t the first assistant coach the Leafs are losing this offseason. At the end of May, the Ottawa Senators turned to the Maple Leafs for their new bench boss and hired Toronto assistant coach D.J. Smith as their new head coach, replacing interim coach Marc Crawford.
