As part of our Countdown to Puck Drop series during the month of September, today we take a long look at the Colorado Avalanche.

The 2016-17 season is one the Avalanche want to put behind them, finishing last in the league with a 22–56–4 record and 48 points. Colorado has stumbled since their last playoff appearance during the 2013-14 season, to say the least.

So, what has GM Joe Sakic done to right the ship in Colorado?

The Avalanche got rid of some pricey veterans, added more young talent, and are yet to pull the trigger on the much-anticipated Matt Duchene trade. Is this enough to bring the Avalanche out of the NHL’s basement?

The core of the Avalanche is focused around Nathan MacKinnon, Matt Duchene, Gabriel Landeskog, Erik Johnson and goalie Semyon Varlamov, with a crop of upcoming players like Mikko Rantanen and Tyson Jost, along with newly acquired forwards Colin Wilson and Nail Yakupov. There’s a lot of potential in Colorado, the question is how long will it take before the team actually starts improving.

There are also a ton of concerns regarding the Avalanche this season: Will Matt Duchene be traded, can Varlamov bounce back from yet another groin injury, can Jonathan Bernier step up in goal if necessary, will they have any help from their defense this season, and will the Avalanche been any better than last year by the time the 2017-18 season starts?
