As part of our Countdown to Puck Drop series during the month of September, today we take a long look at the Calgary Flames.

The Flames will be looking for more consistency in Calgary this season after a 2016-17 campaign that could have slipped away in disappointment if the Flames didn’t have an amazing turn around after limping out of the gate. In short, last season when they were hot, boy were the Flames hot, and when they’re not, they’re not.

For a team that was considered a rebuilder as early as the beginning of last season, the Flames two playoff appearances over the last three years is hinting towards a quick turnaround back to contender status, if they can address some nagging issues from last season.

GM Brad Treliving did the best he could with a handful of offseason moves, such as bringing in goaltender Mike Smith, veteran blueliner Travis Hamonic, along with some younger prospects such as right wing Spencer Foo.

Calgary didn’t shy away from jettisoning a bunch of players as well this offseason, including their goaltenders

With a new goalie tandem, one of the NHL’s best young defensive cores and a top six that looks primed to take another step forward this season, the Flames could start making their case to once again be considered the best team in Alberta.
