As part of our Countdown to Puck Drop series during the month of September, today we take a deep dive on the Ottawa Senators.
Despite entering the 2016-17 season as a bit of a sleeper pick in the East, the Sens exceeded even the most optimistic of forecasts and got to within a single goal of reaching the Stanley Cup Finals. Were it not for a perfectly placed Chris Kunitz OT goal in game seven of the team’s Eastern Conference Final against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Cup may residing in Canada’s capital.
Heading into the 2017-18 season, the Sens have added pressure on them considering their Cinderella run from last Spring. Captain Erik Karlsson could sit out the first month or more after an offseason surgery and veteran Clarke MacArthur’s NHL career looks be in jeopardy again after failing the team’s preseason physical, but the rest of the plucky Sens group should be ready to go when the puck drops on October 5th.
