In a sport as fast and as dangerous as the sport of hockey injuries go from being a concern to simply being a fact of life that every team in the National Hockey League must come to accept. Even though we all accept that reality however when a star player goes down we can not help but groan at the news every single time it is announced.

Sadly today will be no exception as we have just now learned that New Jersey Devils star forward Jack Hughes, the first overall pick at the 2019 National Hockey League Entry Draft, has suffered an injury and will now miss time due to that injury. According to a report from New Jersey Devils reporter Amanda Stein, the injury occurred on Thursday when the Devils faced off against the Montreal Canadiens. Hughes reportedly blocked a shot during that game and, although we do not know the exact nature of his current injury, Stein is strongly hinting at the fact that this is when and where the injury occurred. Hughes was notably absent from practice on Thursday but now the Devils' are officially disclosing the fact that Hughes is in fact injured and have listed him as day to day as he recovers from that injury.

It is a tough break for an 18 year old kid that was playing pretty well all things considered. Hughes had appeared in 24 games for the Devils thus far this season and had netted 4 goals while adding 7 assists for a total of 11 points in those games. His plus minus rating of -8 does not look great of course but given how badly the Devils have struggled this season it is hard to place too much of the blame on Hughes shoulders.'

This will now mark the first time in Hughes career in which he has missed an NHL game, a streak that he no doubt was hoping to carry on for considerably longer than this. It will also be the latest blow to a New Jersey Devils franchise that was hoping to have a big season in order to entice star forward Taylor Hall into signing a new long term deal, something that now seems like nothing but a pipe dream. The Devils currently have just 9 wins on the season and a goal differential of -21, this was the last problem they needed.
