Jason Spezza makes a decision on his playing future

One of the sneakiest free agent acquisitions of this past offseason has to be the Toronto Maple Leafs’ signing of veteran Jason Spezza. Signed for a league minimum $700,000, Spezza has proved his worth and then some with 9 goals and 21 points in 44 games for the Leafs. The 36 year old is on pace to have his best season in three years and has his sights set on returning in 2020-21.

“Yeah, I think so,” Spezza said earlier today when asked by Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston if he plans on sticking around. “If I can contribute down the stretch and the team has success, I don’t see why not.”

“I hope to have a good year and keep going.”

At 36 years old Spezza is one of the oldest players in the NHL, but he relishes the role of being the old guy in the room.

“I love the intensity of it, I love the challenge of trying to get ready, I love the challenge of being 36 and trying to reinvent myself a little bit,” Spezza said during training camp. “I like hanging out with the guys, the banter in the room, the practices. I don’t know if I’m a little bit crazy, but I like the grind of it.”
