Jeff Blashill's comments on Sheahan's unbelievable scoring drought

This is, somehow, an outrageous comment.

Riley Sheahan is in the middle of a scoring drought. A terrible, historic, unbelievable drought.

Fortunately for Sheahan, Detroid Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill has his back. Blashill has defended Sheahan’s performance this season by emphasizing that he is fulfilling his role as a defense-first player, which is exactly what he’s always been, all the way back to when he was playing with Notre Dame as a prospect.

While Riley Sheahan has only scored 36 goals across all his previous seasons with Detroit, his 66-game scoreless streak this season is glaring after he signed a two-year, $4.15 million contract extension this offseason.

Sheahan and Blashill both believe his goalless streak is more of an issue to the media than it is to Sheahan or the team. Blashill is quick to remind everyone that it has been a hard season in Detroit, and Sheahan is dealing with the adversity well.

Detroit fans don’t need to be reminded of what kind of season it’s been, with the team poised to miss the playoffs for the first time since the 1990-91 season. Whether or not fans are buying what Blashill is selling, Riley Sheahan’s spot in Hockey Town seems assured for now.
