The Winnipeg Jets have confirmed the fears of their fans.

According to a report from TSN's Brian Munz, the Jets confirmed on Saturday that 22 year old Nikolaj Ehlers would miss the next several weeks of action as the result of an upper body injury that he suffered during the Jets Friday night match up against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Munz's source for the information is Winnipeg Jets' head coach Paul Maurice so there's no denying the authenticity of his report. Maurice did not provide Munz with a specific timeline regarding Ehlers' injury but it sounds like he is going to be out for the long term. According to Maurice Ehlers is out until at least early to mid February of 2019 which means that he will miss at minimum one month of action as a result of his current injury.

Ehlers was injured against the Penguins when he was on the receiving end of a relatively innocuous hit from Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, not exactly the type of player that is known for handing out devastating hits at the NHL level. It is unclear exactly what happened to Ehlers on the play but he did appear to be favoring his shoulder following the hit and if I had to speculate that is where I assume his current injury is located. Crosby's hit was clearly intentional but it was so non violent that you would easily be forgiven for assuming that it had merely been 2 players bumping into one another on the ice.

In spite of that however it was clearly a body check from Crosby as he leaned his shoulder into the shoulder of Ehlers and it also appeared to be a rather clean one on the part of the Penguins superstar. In spite of the clean nature of the hit however it was fairly obvious that something was not right with Ehlers immediately following the impact. Ehlers would skate back to the Jets benched while hunched over and once he got there he could be seen grasping at his shoulder as he spoke to the Winnipeg trainers. He would eventually head to the back and it looks like he won't be back until at least one more month.
