John Scott a playoff enforcer?

Well this would certainly be very interesting.

Although we have not heard his name brought up for some time now there's almost no doubt that everyone reading this will be intimately familiar with former National Hockey League enforcer John Scott. Regarded as nothing but a goon for the majority of his career Scott became the darling of NHL fans when a mean spirited prank by journalist Greg Wyshynski attempted to insert John Scott into the All Star Game. What no one, including Wyshynski, could have predicted was that instead of mocking John Scott the fans of the NHL rallied around the kindhearted enforcer and instead of being treated to ridicule Scott and those same fans helped create arguably the most memorable All Star game in NHL history.

We do not hear Scott's name much at all anymore and in fact following that fateful season, a season that saw him traded to the Montreal Canadiens as the NHL attempted to bury him before the All Star game, Scott has never laced up the skates again in an NHL game. That does not mean that his former teammates have forgotten his contributions to their teams however and that may have never been more clear than it is right now. We are in the midst of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and even though Scott was never an elite level player there is at least one NHL star that would like to see him back on his bench.

According to comments made by Scott himself he received a very interesting text message in the last few days from none other than "Jumbo" Joe Thornton of the San Jose Sharks this week regarding his first round series against the Las Vegas Golden Knights in the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Thornton reportedly reached out to Scott, asking him if he would contribute just 6 minutes a night in order to get back into the line up to specifically deal with players like Golden Knights forward Ryan Reaves. Reaves and Thornton have of course been engaged in a highly publicized feud and it seems Scott is very much aware of it.

Here's what Scott revealed on his podcast:

It was just cool. I thought that was a cool little story where arguably one of the best players ever sends you a text. He’s like, “Listen, all we need is a good six minutes out of ya, that’s it.” I’m like, “I’m coming, Jumbo. I’m gonna play Game 4, I’ll beat Reaves up and I’ll be done.” He’s like, “I love it. I love it.”

[...] It got me fired up, talking with Jumbo, because of what Ryan Reaves said about him the other day, saying how he’s old and he needs glasses and this and that. [He sighs] It’s like, disrespect. Y’know? To treat one of, if not the greatest passer of all time, who still puts up 40-50 points a year, who’s 37 ... he’s one of the best players ever. Top ten in scoring ever, I think might be top five right now? It’s just the lack of respect.

I get it, it’s the playoffs, you’re trying to get under his skin, but show a little class, Reaves. Like c’mon.

I doubt we will see Scott in the playoffs, but I would be more than willing to tune in for a Reaves vs Scott match up if he were somehow to find himself back on the Sharks bench.
