This is not the best way to leave.

The UFA market is one of the craziest time of the year. Players who have been with their team for a long time suddenly looks to move elsewhere and get a bigger payday. However, for some other guys, mostly veterans, moving to a new team feels like a fresh start.

Justin Williams has been pretty vocal on his willingness to move to a new team and many were surprised. After spending two years in D.C., the veteran forward now looks for something else, but his thought process has now been made public. In an interesitng interview by the Washington Post, he provided a very telling quote.

“First and foremost, at this point, you want your family to be comfortable. That’s probably number one on the list, and then number two is a chance to win. I feel like I’ve got a lot of game left. I’ve got a lot of will to win left in me, and I’m still productive. I want to go to a team that has a chance to win.”

The first part about the family is obviously not open for arguing. Of course, family should always come first and nearing the end of your career, less movement and more stability are to be expected.

Thing is, Williams then moves on saying he's looking for a team ''that has a chance to win''. Considering the Caps finished at the top of the rankings two years in a row, this comes at a surprise. Sure, the Playoff results were now as good as many wished, but there are many more competitive teams around. Why then would he look to move to a lesser competitive market by using chances to win as an argument?

He closes the interview with a very revealing quote that may explain it all.

“It’s certainly unfinished business. There’s only one team that ends the season on a win, and everyone else is disappointed. With the aspirations that we had, yes, it’s frustrating and definitely the hardest loss I had to take in my career just because of the expectations brought on from us and the way we played. It didn’t happen, so it’s been tough to overcome.”

Maybe the loss against the Pens on the second round was just too much to endure and Williams will find peace somewhere else.
