Locked in a 1-1 series tie with the Toronto Maple Leafs, it looks like the Washington Capitals may be missing a key piece from their defensive corps when they take to the ice tonight at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre for game 3.

The team announced this morning that 28 year-old defensive defenseman Karl Alzner is a game-time decision for tonight’s contest. If it turns out that Alzner is unable to suit up on the team’s top pairing with John Carlson, head coach Barry Trotz will have to do some shuffling amongst his defensive group.

It’s likely that one of Nate Schmidt or Taylor Chorney would draw into the lineup and Trotz would move players up accordingly. The silver lining is that it could provide more ice time for the recently acquired Kevin Shattenkirk, who has looked good in somewhat limited minutes since arriving in D.C.

As for Alzner, the former 5th overall draft pick has put up 28 points in 82 games this season and is entering the offseason as an unrestricted free agent. He’s already garnering league-wide attention from general managers who may be in the market for his services this offseason, so suffice it to say that many people will follow his injury status with great interest.
