Karlsson makes worrisome statement in return to Ottawa

Erik Karlsson is back in Ottawa and the San Jose Sharks defenseman seems more than happy about.

“The time is nigh,” he said with a laugh as he faced media members after the practice on Friday, per the Ottawa Sun.

Saturday afternoon, the former Ottawa Senators captain and star blue liner for four season will make his return to the Canadian Tire Centre.  It’s his first visit since being dealt to the Sharks back in September. Coming to Ottawa after a 5-3 loss at the hands of Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday evening felt normal to Karlsson.

"We got in yesterday. It feels normal,” Karlsson said. “I’ve just been home. We skated here today. If we would’ve skated at the CTC, it would have been a little bit different maybe.

“I feel fairly calm, a little anxious, and obviously it feels a little bit different. I slept at home so that was nice.”

When Karlsson was sent off to San Jose in a blockbuster trade early in September, he didn't hide the fact that Ottawa will always be home to him. His wife Melinda is from the region, and the Swedish defender intends on keeping his house in the nation's capital.

While it is well-known Karlsson feels at home in Ottawa, it does not seem like the same can be said about San Jose. For now, at least. When asked about his future with the Sharks, as the talented blue liner will be eligible for free agency this coming summer, Karlsson made some worrisome statement, revealing he hasn't thought about his future in San Jose.

"We have a great team, everybody has treated me really well, and trying to make it as easy as possible for me.
“At the same time, I’ve been trying to stay as focused as I can on the hockey part. As for travel and lifestyle, it’s all very different and it’s something over time that’s going to get easier and easier. I’m excited with the next chapter in my life and the experience I’m going to gain from this.”

For now, the story includes a return to his former team, and the game on Saturday afternoon could finally close one other chapter of his career. However, Karlsson isn't sure it will bring him closure.

“As of right now I’m just going to enjoy this moment whether that’s closure or not I’m not really .”

One thing is clear: Karlsson has no regret.

“None. I had a great time here. I came here as a young boy and I spent my entire adult life here. I created everything that I have for myself right now being here and being around the people here.

“I loved it. I’ve had a great time. Looking back I don’t think I would change anything. They made me who I am today and I’m thankful for that.”
