Despite the bitter breakup that took place last September after which Erik Karlsson was traded to the San Jose Sharks, Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun suggested that the former Senators captain may be willing to return to the Ottawa Senators this summer.

However, no everyone agrees with him, despite Karlsson’s wife Melinda’s wish to return to Ottawa, it is believe that the dream is far from reality.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman explained on his latest 31 Thoughts podcast on Sportsnet that Karlsson will not re-sign with the Senators. According to him, the nasty divorce that led to the trade remains too fresh and Karlsson will need to find another spot close to Ottawa to please his wife.

While the Montreal Canadiens have suddenly become an option as Karlsson hopes to see them make a competitive offer for his services, the star blue liner has to remain realistic. The Habs have more than $11 million in projected cap space, however, different holes need to be filled in Montreal.

Karlsson battled injuries in his first season with the Sharks and only took part in 53 regular season games, but still managed to post 45 points and he added another 16 points in 19 playoff games.

Many believe Karlsson should strongly consider the New York Rangers as a destination once the free market opens as a short flight to Ottawa remain a good option for Melinda.

It remains to be seen what the Karlssons will decide to do if Friedman is right and Ottawa is out of the running.
