They’re in way more trouble than we thought…

It is no secret: the Vegas Golden Knights are tight against the salary cap. As we are writing this piece, Vegas has a payroll of $ 85,024 million, more than $ 3.5 million above the salary cap for next season, set at $ 81.5 million.

To make matters worse, they have yet to sign KHL star Nikita Gusev, who is reportedly seeking $4 million per season, nor veteran defenseman Deryk Engelland.

In order to solve this issue, they are going to have to find a way to shed some salary.

However, karma has come to bite them in the ass.

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, there is a very clear reason why the Golden Knights have so much trouble freeing up space on their payroll via the trade market. On the air of Sportsnet, Friedman revealed that the other GMs in the league have not forgotten when this new expansion team took advantage of their situation to put his rivals in a vulnerable position when they got their hands on key players for basically nothing at the expansion draft. Some believe that is why they managed to be so successful during their first year, making it all the way to the Stanley Cup finals.

And now karma strikes back as the insider claims other general managers do not intend to give them any easy pass. It seems like Vegas will have to pay the full price to find a solution to their tight cap space…
