Keefe: Jake Muzzin is “recovering quickly.”

There was a scary situation this week when Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Muzzin had to be carried off the ice on a stretcher during a Qualifying Round series against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Muzzin had been the victim of a crosscheck from Blue Jackets forward Pierre Luc Dubois, but the slow motion video replay appeared to indicate that the injury had come when Muzzin's head collided with the leg of Blue Jackets forward Oliver Bjorkstrand.

Here's another angle:

This was the scene as Muzzin left the game on a stretcher:

Given the severity of these images you can certainly appreciate why there was a high level of concern regarding his status, but thankfully on Sunday we got some news that can only be described as extremely positive. Muzzin appears to have bounced back in record time from the injury and according to Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe the veteran defenseman was even on the ice this morning for a bit if a skate, the first time he had left his hotel room since suffering the injury. Even better than that though Keefe indicating that Muzzin was recovering quickly, although if I had to guess I would suspect that he will not play in tonight's game. Keep in mind that is only a guess at this time, the Leafs do not appear to have officially confirmed his status just yet, but given that he has not yet participated in a full practice since the injury it would be one heck of a long shot if he makes it into the Leafs lineup this evening.

That is a tough break for the Maple Leafs who will be down one of their top defensemen, although the news was to be expected given the circumstances. The Blue Jackets on the other hand will see the return of two of their injured defenseman this evening with head coach John Tortorella providing updates of his own earlier today.

Update: According to Leafs reporter James Mirtle Muzzin will in fact not be in for the Leafs this evening, hopefully he will be able to make a full recovery from that scary incident in relatively short order.
