Kerry Fraser calls out the officiating in Game 6 on Sunday.,

Well this is certainly an interesting development.

Former National Hockey League referee Kerry Fraser was certainly no stranger to controversy during his career as an official in the National Hockey League, and now it seems he's going to be making things difficult for the current crop of NHL officials as well. On Sunday afternoon the St. Louis Blues faced off against the Dallas Stars and the game was subject to something of a controversy in the game's final period.

You see it was in that period that St. Louis Blues defenseman Colton Parayko fired off a howitzer of a slap shot towards Dallas Stars goaltender Ben Bishop, a shot that would take Bishop right out of the play. The blast from Parayko appeared to catch Bishop up in the shoulder or collarbone area and although we now know that x-rays have come back negative, it was obvious Bishop was badly hurt on this play. The Stars goaltender was never able to get back into the play and it resulted in an easy goal on a wide open net for the Blues.

As per the National Hockey League's rule book the officials on the ice made the correct call. A play can be blown dead if a player is "seriously" injured, however what is or is not a serious injury effectively comes down to the discretion of the official on the ice. Additionally when you consider the fact that Ben Bishop would remain in the game after the goal the officials would have been crucified if they had blown the play dead, cost the Blues a goal, only to have Bishop decide he's fine to keep playing a few moments later.

In spite of that however Fraser believes that the wrong decision was made here and it comes down to that word "serious" again. Fraser obviously believes that in the case of a goaltender this should be an easy stoppage in play, and when you consider how a goalie could have pucks flying at him while injured, it does make some sense.

"Stian..I know the rule that quoted very well," began Fraser. "Typically applied to a skater. A goalie is provided some extra measures of protection. The point you, & obviously NBC is missing that in the case of “serious” injury play can be stopped immediately. Common sense application on goalie!"

Do you agree with Kerry Fraser? Or do you think the officials on the ice today got it right?
