This is a good thing this incident took place AFTER the trade deadline.

Already way out of playoff contention, the Los Angeles Kings are trying to fight for honor amidst this horrible season. Currently in 30th place overall in the NHL, only the Ottawa Senators have a worse record than them. And when things are this bad, it is usually when it comes to a tragic end…

Back on Dec. 2, 1995 in Montreal, NHL fans will remember that the Patrick Roy vs. Mario Tremblay incident and we might have seen the latest version of that event. More than 20 years ago, Tremblay, the head coach of the Canadiens had left Roy in the net while the Detroit Red Wings beat the hell out of the Habs. Feeling humiliated, Roy then challenged his coach publicly, stating it was his last game in Montreal. Shortly after, he was traded.

Now fans are wondering if the same thing will happen with the Kings after last night’s humiliating 6-1 at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes.

On the first goal of the Canes, goalie Jonathan Quick was clearly obstructed by an opposing player, preventing him from stopping the puck. His head coach, Willie Desjardins, however, did not see fit to ask the officials to go to the video replay and use his challenge on the sequence. Furious, Quick went over to the bench to yell at Desjardins in front of the cameras, thus making him look bad and questioning his authority.

From there, it kept getting worse for the Kings as the Hurricanes managed to score five other unanswered goals… Desjardins might have been sour with Quick’s actions so he refused to pull him out even though the Canes were leading 6-0. He left his humiliated goalie in between the pipes until the end of the second period, until finally backup Jack Campbell took over to finish the game in the third period.

After the match, Quick refused to talk to reporters, obviously frustrated over the situation. For his part, Desjardins tried to make amends by saying he probably should have asked for a review on the first goal of the game, thus giving reason to the veteran goalkeeper.

The 33-year-old goalie is signed for another four years on his current deal, earning him $ 5.8 million a year.  However, Desjardins remains the interim coach for Kings and this heated situation could lead the Kings to replace him over the summer.

Desjardins in the role of Mario Tremblay, Quick in the role of Patrick Roy… we all know how that ended! However, this time, it might be the head coach paying for it all…
