Kings look to swap 2nd pick with Rangers’ first in package trade?!

The National Hockey League 2020 Draft is just a couple of hours away and the New York Rangers’ phone keeps ringing… While general manager Jeff Gorton has made it abundantly clear that he is looking to keep his first overall pick to select Alexis Lafreniere later tonight, teams are reportedly still trying to see if he is willing to make a trade.

TSN’s Frank Seravalli has ever revealed that the Los Angeles Kings, who surprisingly ended up with the second overall pick at the lottery draft that took place this past June, contacted the Rangers to see if a swap of the second pick for their first was a possibility.

Alas, Seravalli confirms that the Kings were told that the Blue Shirts have zero intention of trading No. 1, though Los Angeles’ exact offer is not known yet.

The Rangers have been thrilled ever since they ended up winning the second phase of the draft lottery after the qualifying round of the postseason. And they have been eyeing Lafreniere from the start. It would be very doubtful indeed to fee Gorton making a last-minute move of his first overall pick.

The Rangers do hold a second pick in the first round, having acquired the 22nd overall pick from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Brady Skjei. The rumour is that the Blue Shirts would be willing to move that pick and could be getting calls on that potential trade chip.

However, we bet it will be less calls than for the first overall, which they will use tonight to select Lafreniere (that seems to be written in the skies!)
