Ilya Kovalchuk’s last chance with the Montreal Canadiens seems to be paying off, but the veteran forward had to know that media in the city will come at you with all kinds of questions.

That’s what happened on Tuesday when Eric Engels of Sportsnet sat down with Kovalchuk to talk about his age.

Engels wanted to discuss the rumour that Kovalchuk entered the National Hockey League with a forged birth certificate that would hide the fact that he is 38 years old and not 36.

Kolvachuk answered his questions with a chuckle.

“That’s not true,” Kovalchuk said.

Of course, Engels did not expect him to say otherwise and pressed on when he explained the suggestion from Slava Malamud that it’s commonly known in Russia that Kovalchuk is two years older than what’s been reported.

“That’s totally ridiculous.

“Every year at the Draft there’s rumours about forged birth certificates and it’s stupid.”

While it was clear that Kovalchuk was not going to drop a bomb that he is older than everyone believes, he still managed to face the question and comment on them.

However, we still don’t know who to believe: is he 38 or 36?

No matter what the answer is, you have to admit that Kovy is in great shape for someone older than 35!
