Count Toronto Maple Leafs forward Leo Komarov as one of those who remains skeptical of fancy new NHL stats like Corsi. The veteran didn’t mince words with The Athletic’s Jonas Siegel following the team’s 4-2 loss to the Washington Capitals earlier this week when asked how things were going lately.
“You tell me,” said Komarov as he pulled off his equipment after playing more than 16 minutes in the loss.
“The numbers are saying it’s not gone as well,” I said.
“What numbers?” he said looking up. “Corsi?”
“Yeah.”
“Oh,” Komarov said. “You’re still doing that shit?”
How awesome is that? Most players would simply stare blankly ahead or offer up a token answer after a tough loss like Saturday’s. But not Leo. He’s not one to hold back and let you know what he really thinks… and that’s why we love him.
