Kris Letang has been injured once again.

This is an all to familiar story for fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

According to a breaking news report from NHL.com's Dan Rosen, Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan has informed him that Penguins star defenseman Kris Letang has been injured. According to Sullivan Letang is suffering from some form of upper body injury and the Penguins' bench boss has deemed him to be day to day as of right now. 

This of course means that the Penguins will be unable to go tonight when they face off against a New York Rangers team that has nothing to lose and very little to play for as far as their final games of the 2018 - 2019 National Hockey League season is concerned. Although the Penguins would have to suffer a complete collapse in order to miss the playoffs at this stage of the season, I have no doubt that the possibility of playing spoiler will have the Rangers turning up to play this evening. 

Letang of course has been one of the most injury prone star level players in the National Hockey League over the past several seasons and this marks just one more such frustration for the Penguins fan base. Letang has only appeared in a total of 63 games all season due to the injuries he has suffered in the 2018 - 2019 NHL campaign, although when he has been healthy he has continued to be a stud on the blue line for the Penguins. 

Through his 63 games in the regular season thus far Letang has picked up 16 goals and 40 assists for a very impressive 56 points and boasts a plus minus rating of +13 this season in spite of the injury woes that have no doubt hampered him out on the ice. Unfortunately that also means that the Penguins will sorely miss Letang's point production from the blue line, point production they could really use at this time of the season to lock in their current spot in the playoffs. 

Thankfully Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford had the foresight to add defenseman Erik Gudbranson in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks. Although that move was heavily criticized at the time Gudbranson has looked like a completely different player on the Penguins roster and the extra depth will be a big deal for the Penguins while Letang is on the sidelines.
