A tough call by the NHL after a big hit on Andrew Shaw.

The National Hockey League had a tough call to make following a big hit from Boston Bruin Torrey Krug on Montreal Canadiens forward Andrew Shaw, but we feel they made the right one.

Krug absolutely laid out Shaw with a monster hit near center ice on Monday night and while the point of impact was clearly Shaw's head, or more precisely his face, the NHL's Department of Player Safety ruled that it was Shaw who who bore the brunt of the blame for that impact.

As you can see in the video below Shaw leans forward a great deal just prior to the impact as he attempts to make a play on the puck, and even a smaller man like Krug can't get low enough to avoid making contact with his head in that position.

The NHL has determined that Shaw put himself in a vulnerable position making head contact unavoidable on a play that otherwise would have been a clean body check.
