Fans are quick to criticize Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas, however, we have to admit that one of his recent moves might be tough to compete with. The numbers speak for themselves: we have to admit that Dubas managed to land incredible boost on the back end by signing Mikko Lehtonen to one-year, entry-level contract back in May.

The signing might have gone quiet seeing that everyone was busy and focused on the NHL’s Return to play plan, however, it is easy to realize how great of an addition it will become for the Maple Leafs.

Currently in the KHL with the Jokerit Helsinki, Lehtonen scored his eight goal in just 14 games on October 21st. He now has a total of 16 points since the season kicked off and has begun the best defenseman on the roster.

We can see how he would be a deadly boost to the Leafs’ blue line, where issues have never gone unnoticed across the league. Dubas has added T.J. Brodie to his lineup thanks to free agency, but we believe Lehtonen could crack the roster ahead of Rasmus Sandin and Thomas Liljegren. Sure, the two young prospects have a lot to offer, but we cannot forget about Lehtonen who could even push new Leafs d-man Zach Bogosian on the seventh spot! Here is how we see a potential opening night blue line for the Maple Leafs:

Reilly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Lehtonen - Dermott

Things might change until then, but for now, you have to admit Lehtonen is impressive and could be an important member of the Leafs’ back end next season.

For now, Jokerit Helsinki's season is being suspended due to four cases of coronavirus on the team. Let's hope everyone is healthy soon enough so we can see more of Lehtonen on the ice!
