Another star player unhappy in Winnipeg?

We’re now just one month away from the opening of the Winnipeg Jets’ training camp and former 2nd overall pick Patrik Laine is still without a contract.

The 21 year old restricted free agent put up 30 goals and 50 points in 82 games last season. Pretty solid… but a step backward for the Finnish sniper. Just a season ago, Laine put up 44 goals and 70 points in 82 games. So, who’s the real Patrik Laine? The guy who was pushing 50 goals two seasons ago, or the guy who looked lazy and disinterested this past season? Suffice it to say it has made things difficult for Laine and the Jets in contract negotiations.

But now, comments made by Laine in a one on one interview with Chris Johnston of Sportsnet are sparking questions about whether or not the budding superstar wants to remain in Winnipeg.

Check out these quotes from Laine below.

When asked if he expects to sign a contract with the Jets:

“Well you never know. It’s still business, you’ve got to be prepared for anything. But yeah, you never know where you’re going to play next year so I’m just prepared for anything.”

When asked if he enjoys living in Winnipeg:

“Well I’ve got nothing bad to say about Winnipeg, you know? It’s been good so far. But you never know, so that’s kind of my comments.”

Those words don’t make it seem like Laine is too enthusiastic to return to the Jets’ lineup. Now, compare those words with fellow un-signed Jets RFA Kyle Connor’s own words when asked about signing with the team:

“We have great guys in the system and we have great players and trust in the management and the coaching staff. We’re going to be a good team for sure.”

Interesting times in Winnipeg.
