Latest Oilers roster move will enrage fans more than they already are!

When Edmonton Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli placed forward Ryan Spooner on waivers Monday, it sounded like another ridiculous move by the GM. The thing is: he has made so many mistakes in his role as general manager of a team who could be a top contender in the postseason, that this one most people won't remember once he gets the boot by Oilers CEO Bob Nicholson

But this had to be pointed out - and it is almost certain to enrage fans more than they already are!

Fans were upset when Spooner landed on waivers on Monday because it reminded them how terrible the trade that brought him to Edmonton was. The 26-year-old was acquired from the New York Rangers in exchange for centre Ryan Strome back on Nov. 16. Strome was the piece he got in return for... Jordan Eberle!

He has two years left on an $8-million deal he signed prior to the start of the season and is expected to be an expensive healthy scratch so, it made sense in a way to place him on the wire. However, you lost Strome for that guy! Chiareilli, get it together!

Spooner has appeared in 40 games this season, split between the Rangers and the Oilers, and has just three goals and two assists in those 40 contests. While he cleared waivers, because no one can afford him ahead of the busy trade deadline, it was announced on Tuesday afternoon that Spooner would be back in the Oilers' lineup tonight to face the Detroit Red Wings.

We can only imagine the embarrassing conversation that took place between Chiarelli and Spooner after practice on Tuesday:

"You know the whole waivers thing son... Just kidding!"

Spooner will stick around the NHL for the time being, but he is expected to eventually head down to the minors once the club needs a roster spot to activate Oscar Klefbom off injured reserve. The star blue liner is set to return from a finger injury after the All-Star break at the end of the month.

It remains to be seen what kind of attitude Spooner will have as he is inserted back in the lineup for tonight's tilt against the Red Wings. It could be his chance to help his team and prove to his GM that he was right to make a move for him earlier in the season.

In the meantime, we all expect the Oilers fans' attitude to remain the same or grow even more enraged - until Chiarelli is fired from his position in Edmonton.
