Leafs can’t pull off goalie trade!

The Toronto Maple Leafs were handed a massive blow on Tuesday morning when it was confirmed that starting goalie Frederik Andersen would not be travelling with the team after suffering a neck injury on Monday. He is considered day-to-day.

It did not take long for trade rumours to kick back up in Toronto as general manager Kyle Dubas probably has to change his deadline plans depending on how long Andersen’s absence will be.

While several suggestions and trade targets were made for the Leafs to bolster up in between the pipes, Bob McKenzie believes Toronto won’t be able to make a trade happen to get an upgrade in between the pipes. Here is how he explained it on last night’s Insider Trading on TSN:

“I would expect the Toronto Maple Leafs hunt for a backup goaltender. It’s intensified after last night’s game against the Florida Panthers. The good news is that Freddie Andersen is day-to-day so maybe it may not be as serious as originally looked. And the other good news is that in his last four starts, and I stress starts, as a backup, Michael Hutchinson has gone 4-0 but you still get the feeling that last night was a tipping point for the Leafs in terms of getting an upgrade in net. In his last three relief performances, Michael Hutchinson has not been good. Three goals on 13 shots last night, four goals on 17 shots against Florida a couple of weeks ago and three goals on 16 shots in a relief performance against Edmonton on Jan. 6. A couple of those were winnable games, they’re not getting what they need so they’ve got to go out and look but With the cap considerations and the market being what it is, it’s going to be a difficult needle to thread.”

Is it no secret that the Maple Leafs are cap-strapped and they are also believe to be on the move for a blue liner, depending on what happens with injury Morgan Rielly and the free agency this summer.

The Leafs might keep their fingers crossed for Andersen and put all of their trust in Hutchinson.
