The Toronto Maple Leafs appointed veteran National Hockey League John Tavares their captain no doubt in large part due to things like this. Tavares has experience as a captain in a major market having previously captained the New York Islanders, so it comes as little surprise to see him leading the charge in terms of philanthropic contributions to those in need during a trying time like the one currently impacting everyone around the globe.

After having already made contributions to help support arena staff and employees during the shut down of the 2019 - 2020 National Hockey League regular season the Leafs captain went the extra step this week when he made a generous donation to local area hospitals in an effort to support workers on the front line of this crisis.

“Everything they’re sacrificing and the risks that they’re taking … it’s very moving and it’s very heroic,” said the Leafs center as per The Canadian Press. “At times it’s hard to find the words.

“It’s a real challenge, but they’re doing everything they can to help everyone they can fight this virus and get things back to normal.”

Although the amount donated has not been disclosed, reports indicate that the money will be going to a pair of local Toronto hospitals in Trillium Health Partners and Mount Sinai Hospital. Not only is Tavares leading by example here but he also brought on some of his fellow Maple Leafs teammate to help the initiative, although the names of those players was not disclosed.

“It was great the way guys came together with this initiative,” Tavares said. “We’ve seen through many other sports, many other athletes trying to find ways to help any way they can.”

Although hospitals and front line workers will no doubt need more and more support with each passing day it is wonderful to see leaders in the hockey community set an example for the next generation of player, but also for fans of the sport as well. Tavares' message was clearly one of unity, one in which he called upon everyone to help do their part as we all work together to quickly put an end to this crisis.

“It shows how equally vulnerable we all are, no matter what you’ve done in your life or what kind of success you’ve had or whatever you do for a living,” Tavares said. “It also shows how important it is that we come together as human beings to do whatever we can to help.”
