The Toronto Maple Leafs need to look at different options to get the most out of their tight cap space, and it seems like another possibility might have landed on their lap this week.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun, the Maple Leafs have discussed a potential trade with the Los Angeles Kings.

The idea of shipping Marleau to Los Angeles makes sense: the Kings recently hired Todd McLellan as their new head coach, he who was Marleau’s bench boss for many years with the San Jose Sharks. This could persuade the veteran forward to waive his full no-move clause to join the Kings.

LeBrun however does not believe that there appears to be a fit at the moment. Cap Friendly shows the Kings would need to shed salary in order to acquire Marleau, who has one year at a $6.25 million cap hit left on his contract.

The 39-year-old posted 16 goals and 37 points last season with Toronto. He joined the Maple Leafs in 2017 on a three-year, $18.75 million contract after 19 seasons on the west coast with the Sharks.

The Leafs recently pulled a successful move with the Kings prior to the trade deadline. Toronto managed to land defenseman Jake Muzzin in return for forward Carl Grundstrom, the rights to unsigned prospect Sean Durzi, and the Maple Leafs’ 2019 first-round draft pick.

Will another trade with the Kings take place this summer?
