Leafs’ Dubas calls out TSN’s Dreger for his latest gossip on Marner!
Twitter

A bomb was dropped earlier this week when NHL insider Darren Dreger revealed that he expects the negations for Mitch Marner‘s new contract to extend past July 1st and that the young forward will likely meet with other NHL teams during the RFA offer sheet interview period that begins on June 26th.

It didn’t take long for fans and pundits to go after the Maple Leafs and general manager Kyle Dubas, wondering what should be done to keep the young star in Toronto.

The chatter got so loud that Dubas needed to say something about the ongoing contract negotiations to make sure the Leafs can keep things under control before they get into an offer sheet battle with many rival clubs…

"I'm a very optimistic person," Dubas said Thursday at the NHL's scouting combine. "That's what's has been expressed on everybody's end. If everyone is in it on that way, we should be able to get there."
"The system is what it is," he added. "The market has kind of beared out where everyone fits in and it's just trying to work around the edge of that to come to conclusions."

However, Dubas made sure to take a shot at Dreger for starting the mayhem and even made just to let him know that he won’t get anymore insider information on the upcoming deal.

“The Dreger Café got it kicked back up when it landed back in North America, which is fine, but there won’t be anything coming from us.”

The Maple Leafs have over $74.2 million invested in 17 players for 2019-20, which means they have less than $9 million to work with should the salary cap reach the projected $83 million.

It is expected that Marner will be seeking Auston Matthews money, he who agreed to a  $11.6 million AAV that he signed prior to the trade deadline back in February.

But for now, we won’t know any details, especially if Dubas is mad about the latest gossip out of Toronto.
