Leafs get creative with Anderson’s contract to fit under salary cap!

General manager Kyle Dubas has done it again. The Toronto Maple Leafs signed newly acquired forward Joey Anderson to a three-year, $2.25 million contract extension on Friday.

We can hear the numbers crunching in your brain as we speak, however, know that Dubas found a creative way to make this one fit as much as possible under the flattened salary cap. The deal, which carries an average annual value of $750,000 at the NHL level, is a two-way contract in its first two years and one-way in the final year.

He is the last of the restricted free agents to deal with in Toronto this offseason.

This makes it more feasible for the Maple Leafs to get under the cap this way. Anderson was acquired earlier this month from the New Jersey Devils for winger Andreas Johnsson.

Anderson, who was selected by the Devils in the third round of the 2016 NHL Draft, posted four goals and six points in 18 games with the Devils last season, adding 15 goals and 34 points in 44 games with the AHL’s Binghamton Devils.

This is a smart way for Dubas to get additional depth up front at low cost.
