Leafs head coach Keefe demands upgrade in between the pipes!

A couple of weeks ago, Toronto Maple Leafs new head coach Sheldon Keefe wanted to be positive about his goaltending rotation and backup goalie Michael Hutchinson.

After recalling the backup veteran and starting him in what turned out to be a loss, Keefe is not as confident with Hutchinson anymore. So much than on Tuesday, when talking about the upcoming game against the Canucks in Vancouver, the new bench boss sent a message to management about finding an upgrade.

When asked if starter Frederik Andersen is willing to take on an heavier load this season, Keefe let this slip:

“I haven’t talked to him about that. We’re taking it a day at a time. But also knowing that it’s imperative for us to get things moving with a second goaltender that can come in and play well.”

For weeks now, Leafs have been linked to different trade rumours in order to get some help in between the pipes.

Last week, Sportsnet’s Brian Burke revealed that the Leafs will most likely need to give up a lot in return for goaltending help, and fans won’t be allowed to complain about it.

“It’s beyond price. You’re going to have to overpay. And I would do that — and if Kyle does that I will not criticize him,” Burke told
Sportsnet 590 The Fan’s Good Show. “If he has to give up a second-round pick or a good kid to solve this issue… because this is their Achilles heel. This is a fatal flaw for this team making the playoffs, if they don’t address this.”

It remains to be seen what netminder can come in and help right away and what his price will be. But Keefe wants to see the Leafs get a move on!
