Count Hall of Famer Borje Salming as one of the cautionary tales with COVID-19. The 69 year old former Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman is at home resting after a difficult fight against the virus and is expected to make a full recovery. But, things didn’t always look that way.

“It was scary,” Salming told NHL.com from his native Sweden. “I was having problems breathing. At times I couldn’t even breathe. I was shivering and shivering. It was awful.”

“I felt like I was dying. I thought I was. That’s how bad it was. You can’t really describe it. I was so sick. I really did think, ‘Well, this could be it.’

Now, a healthy Salming is thanking those who helped him get through his battle with the virus and he’s warning others to take serious measures against contracting the virus.

“Once I felt strong enough again, it’s something I wanted to do,” he told NHL.com. “People are scared. I know the feeling. And if my notoriety means I have a voice people feel they can listen to and feel better about what’s going on around them, that’s a real positive.”
