The Toronto Maple Leafs have reportedly been looking for a defenseman all season and now many believe they may have their eyes on St. Louis' Kevin Shattenkirk.

The latest waiting to see what the Leafs will do is Sabres insider Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News. From Harrington:

You wonder what the Maple Leafs will do about making a move on St. Louis' Kevin Shattenkirk...

There have been rumors that Shattenkirk is willing to sign a long-term deal if traded to an Eastern team, however TSN insider Darren Dreger appeared to dispel those rumors this week.

“For awhile now, many of us have assumed that his preference was to go to the East, and perhaps as specific as the Eastern seaboard as a pending unrestricted free agent," said Dreger as per Fanrag Sports. "Well, that limits the options to a handful. And I’m told by his representatives that that’s not the case."

That being said, Dreger does believe that Shattenkirk's willingness to sign an extension may bring more players to the table, and the Leafs biggest competitior may be another Canadian team, although it will be just one of many.

“If there was an appetite to extend the contract from Shattenkirk’s perspective, then perhaps that gives Doug Armstrong – the general manager in St. Louis – a little bit more leverage to expect more in return from, say Montreal, or any other team that would have interest in Shattenkirk. The interest in Kevin Shattenkirk would be in the double digits."

This is one rumor we will be following closely.
