The Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni have announced the passing of George Ferguson, who played six seasons in the city of Toronto. Ferguson suited up for the Leafs in close to 370 games from 1972 to 1978. Born in Trenton, Ontario, Toronto was essentially his hometown team. Ferguson died today at the age of 67.

Drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs with the 11th overall pick of the 1972 NHL Draft, Ferguson was just three games shy of 800 in total in his NHL career. He frequently skated on a line alongside Lanny McDonald and Errol Thompson in Toronto. The Leafs dealt Ferguson and teammate Randy Carlyle to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Dave Burrows in June of 1978. Ferguson played five seasons in Pittsburgh from 1978-83, recording four straight 20+ goal seasons before he wrapped up his NHL career with the Minnesota North Stars from 1982-84.

Known as the “Fergy Flyer”, one of Ferguson’s biggest moments came in the playoffs versus the Buffalo Sabres in 1979 when he scored the game-tying goal in the third that sent the game into overtime, and then added the OT goal to clinch the series. Our sincere condolences to Ferguson’s entire family, as well as his friends and fans.
