The Toronto Maple Leafs have just made a very curious addition to their line up, although it's currently not clear why the felt the need to make the move now all of a sudden.

According to an official report from the Toronto Marlies organization the team has agreed to terms on a new 1 - year deal with long time NHL defenseman Kyle Cumiskey. I assume this has to be the result of the Leafs feeling like they need more depth on the blue line, but it could also be a player being brought in to replace a fellow teammate who has suffered some for of injury. As to who Cumiskey could be replacing your guess is as good as mine at this point.

The signing of Kyle Cumiskey certainly will not be universally praised at the man hasn't played a single game in the NHL since the 2014 - 2015 NHL regular season. The fact that Cumiskey remains so far removed from the National Hockey League should be a big red flag for anyone hoping to see him contribute in any meaningful way this season,. Over his 129 career NHL games the veteran has 9 goals and 26 assists for a total of 35 points but it's certainly not the kind of numbers that will earn you a crack at an NHL roster.

Interestingly enough in spite of signing immediately with Toronto he wanted to "look around" and enjoy the sights a little bit and if you are in South Korea no one is really going to blame you. It will be interesting to see how this develops and whether or not Kyle Cumiskey will earn himself an NHL deal or even an AHL deal at this point of his late career.

Although this is pure speculation on my part and I have no real evidence to corroborate this hypothesis but it does seem fair to suggest that a man so removed from the NHL will be spending the majority of his time in the AHL. Not the best job in the world but certainly not the worse and Cumiskey must really love Toronto there to try and see if he can make it there on a PTO offer.
