Leafs prospects watch: Kapanen and Johnsson are still on fire in the AHL!

The Toronto Maple Leafs have a really good system full of promising prospects, and some of them hare having really good seasons! With the trade deadline approaching, some of these names could get involved in trade discussions, so let's take a look at some of these kids.

Kasperi Kapanen

Kapanen was drafted 22nd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2014. The Leafs acquired him via trade from the Penguins in the blockbuster deal that sent forward Phil Kessel in Pittsburgh. He didn't played a lot in the NHL yet, and he only scored three goals in 23 games, and added two goals in six playoff games last spring. At the AHL level, the 21-year old forward has scored 47 goals and 72 assists for 119 points in 144 games played (regular season and playoffs included). So far this season, the Finnish forward has 11 goals and nine assists for 20 points in 23 games played with the Toronto Marlies (AHL). 

Andreas Johnsson

Johnsson was drafted 202nd by the Leafs back in 2013. The 23-year old forward scored 41 goals and 38 assists for a total of 79 points in 121 games played so far in the AHL (regular season and playoffs included). Before he started playing in North America, the Swedish forward has registered 113 points in 194 games played in the Swedish Hockey League. So far this season, he has 15 goals and 11 assists for 26 points in 33 games played with the Toronto Marlies (AHL).

Nikita Korostelev

Drafted 185th by Toronto in 2015. The Russian forward is playing his fifth season in the OHL, and he keeps producing at a really good pace. In 284 games played with the Sarnia Sting and the Peterborough Petes, the 20-year old forward scored 116 goals and 152 assists for a total of 268 points (regular season and playoffs included). In 37 games played so far this season, he scored 18 goals and added 29 assists for a total of 47 points.
