According to a report from Sportsnet analyst Luke Fox, the Toronto Marlies, American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs have signed veteran goalie Jeff Glass to a one year contract:

Toronto Marlies sign Jeff Glass, last seen in the Blackhawks system. Add to goalie depth lost when McElhinney and Pickard both got scooped on waivers.

UPDATE: The Marlies have now officially confirmed the news.

The TorontoMarlies announced today that goaltender Jeff Glass has been signed to an AHL contract.

Glass had a 2.82 GAA with Rockford (AHL) in 28 games last season.

The Toronto Marlies announced today that the hockey club has signed goaltender Jeff Glass to an AHL contract.

Glass, 32, split his 2017-18 season between the Chicago Blackhawks and Rockford IceHogs (AHL). The Calgary native posted a 15-9-2 record with Rockford, with a 2.82 goals-against average and .904 save percentage in 28 games. Glass appeared in two games with the Marlies during the 2016-17 season. Glass was selected by the Ottawa Senators with the 89th overall pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

The 32 year old Glass split last season with the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks and the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs, but it’s believed that Glass’ deal with the Leafs organization is an “AHL only” deal, meaning that he cannot be called up to the Leafs unless he comes to an NHL agreement with the club. Regardless, Glass provides the Leafs with at least another option to backup goalie Garret Sparks, now that former backups Curtis McElhinney and Calvin Pickard are gone.

In case you missed it, the Leafs exposed both McElhinney and Pickard to waivers earlier this week when they determined that Sparks had won the spot behind starter Frederik Andersen. In effect, the Leafs went from having four capable NHL goaltenders to just two in mere moment. The addition of Glass into the mix at least gives them a solid AHL starter and also gives them the flexibility to sign him to an NHL deal should Sparks falter. What do you think, Leafs fans? Smart move?
