We are still well over a month away from the National Hockey League's trade deadline but for the time being it seems that veteran Philadelphia Flyers winger Wayne Simmonds has quickly become the player that many are projecting to be the top trade target at that deadline.

Simmonds has been the subject of rampant speculation in recent weeks due both to the current state of his team, the Flyers have not lived up to expectations and the firing of general manager Ron Hextall and head coach Dave Hakstol are clear signs of that, as well as due to his expiring contract and the lack of an extension between himself and the Flyers organization. Simmonds is currently in the final year of a $23.85 million dollar contract and given the rumors around the National Hockey League at this time it seems like there is a tremendous amount of interest in the power forward with multiple 30 goal seasons under his belt.

There has plenty of discussion regarding where Simmonds will end up by the time the NHL's trade deadline as come and gone but in a recent article published for The Athletic TSN's NHL insider Pierre LeBrun named 5 teams in particular that he believes, or that his colleagues believe, could seriously look to use a player like Simmonds this season. These of course are not the only 5 potential destinations for Simmonds but when you consider some of the names making these educated guesses I think we can safely say that these 5 have to be considered, at the very least, the front runners for Simmonds' services.

For his part it appears that LeBrun feels the Tampa Bay Lightning would benefit the most from the addition of a player like Simmonds. From LeBrun:

Imagine him in Tampa Bay. I’d love to see the Bolts inquire. The NHL’s first-place team is loaded up front and has very few holes in its lineup but a little more muscle in the form of a very good player wouldn’t hurt. When the Lightning acquired J.T. Miller last year they cited wanting more size up front. I think they can use more. Having Simmonds in the lineup would certainly keep Tom Wilson a little honest if the Capitals and Lightning play again.

That being said the Lightning are not the only team looking to compete for a Stanley Cup and according to LeBrun his colleague Craig Custance believes the Nashville Predators may take a serious run at the power forward. Meanwhile LeBrun's colleague at TSN Darren Dreger has named the Winnipeg Jets as a potential landing spot and LeBrun's sources have told him that both those teams are in fact keeping a close eye on the developing situation around Simmonds' availability. Additionally LeBrun adds that both the Las Vegas Golden Knights, Boston Bruins, and the Calgary Flames would also make good fits for the big powerful Flyers' forward although the Flames and Knights sounded more like names he would throw in the mix rather than names he was dropping due to information from his sources. It does sound like the Bruins have inquired about Simmonds but it's unclear how much interest there really is from the Bruins organization at this time.

There have also been rumors linking them to the Leafs although LeBrun claims that he was personally informed by Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas that they are not in the market for a rental player. That being said LeBrun does acknowledge that things could change at any moment regarding the Leafs as well.
